Jenny and Don both met in VET VIP! Best wishes to you both from all of your brothers and sisters within the organization! We are so happy and proud of you. Oh and how bout that 'Murica!? #wedwhiteandblue
As we continue to grow VET VIP wants to ensure that we are being an active part of our communities around the nation; giving back to other veterans in need who might not members of our organization. Some of the ways we have done so has been fund raising to give a single mother and veteran losing her battle to Colon Cancer the money to buy her children gifts for Christmas in 2015. We have also organized a turkey drive, pairing up veterans in need of a turkey for their families holiday dinner with veterans able to donate this past holiday season. If you have a cause and would like to know if VET VIP can help, please email us at: VIP@vet-vip.org.
May 2016, Jessica Helmes, Found and CEO of VET VIP was nominated as an Everyday Hero in St Petersburg Florida for her work developing this organization and giving back to the veteran community.
You can watch the interview by clicking the Everyday Heroes link above! Thank you to Bill Murphy and his team for his help spreading the word about the organization and telling Amanda Nicole Rieckens story in an effort to help raise money for our "Throat Punch Cancer" fundraiser.
After seeing the VET VIP segment of Everyday Heroes, Pete O'Shea of "The Pete O'Shea Show" on Inspiration radio reached out to Jessica helmes, Founder and ceo of VET VIP, to do a live interview! Click the play button to hear the entire interview which originally aired from 4:30-5Pm on May 23, 2016.
A big thank you to Pete O'shea and his team for putting the spotlight on our fundraiser for Amanda Nicole Rieckens. We are looking forward to doing more work together in the future to help raise money for her cause.
Christmas Wish List
VETERAN IN NEED: In Oxnard California there is a veteran who has been homeless and living on the streets for 15+ years. The Oxnard PD has got him off of the streets and into an apartment as of November. They have ensured that he has furniture and things like that but he is still in need of a few items. We have been so fortunate this year to have been given so many free tickets to games and such. Now is the time for us to give back to one of our own. I have created a Wish List on Walmart.com with a list of items that can be purchased and sent to fellow veteran Alexis Parker at the Port Hueneme Naval base in Ventura County California. She and members from her unit will take the gifts purchased for Ron and deliver them to him for Christmas.
Here is Ron's story provided to us by Alexis.
Ron is a single 60 year old Veteran of the Army. He served for 8 years as a SP4 in the 1970’s. He was referred to Social Worker (SW) by Oxnard Police Department on 09/09/2014. He has been living on the streets for the last 15 + years. He sleeps on a bench on A Street in Oxnard and spends most of his days either on the bench or in the Oxnard Library sleeping. He has no arrest history and no drug/alcohol history. He stated he has no health issues and no history of medical issues although he walks with a cane and has trouble getting up and down after sitting.
SW has been working with Ron on and off for over a year to get him into stable housing. Ron has been awarded a VASH voucher through the Oxnard Housing Authority and SW assisted with getting him into a senior living apartment in Oxnard. (walking distance to town and his regular routine) No support networks were identified and Ron stated he prefers to stick to himself and does not utilize the shelter system or any social services. He has no mailing address and no emergency contact. Ron has no income and has not worked since the 90’s.
On 09/19/2015 Ron moved into his first ever apartment. He was provided furniture (twin bed, small table with 2 chairs, and recliner), canned foods, bedding, kitchen household items and all bathroom necessities. He is currently in need of a very small microwave and food cards (fast food, grocery and/or local downtown Oxnard restaurants). He is not interested in apply for Government assistance such as Calfresh benefits which would assist with his monthly food costs but SW will continue to work on this issue and place it as a goal for the next 6 months. Ron has also stated that he does not know how to cook which will be a barrier for him. Once he has a microwave SW can teach him how to make some basic meals using his microwave.
In the spirit of Christmas and the season of giving we are excited to invite those in need to participate in our holiday turkey gifting event. We only ask that our members please be honest about being in need so that we can ensure a veteran who is truly in need of a turkey this Christmas can receive one. We only have as many turkeys to distribute as we have turkeys that are donated. Read the event flyer for more information! If you would like to participate in this event please contact us at: VIP@vet-vip.org
